DRESS/CLOTHING REGULATIONS FOR MEN/WOMEN (JUNIOR/SENIOR AND MASTERS)

For review by the Board: by October 2025

Introduction:

Every player shall dress and present themselves for play in a professional manner. In addition to the above, clean and customarily acceptable squash attire shall be worn. These rules apply to all squash events sanctioned by Squash SA.

On-Court: The following clothing regulation shall apply without exception to all WSF/PSA World Tour tournaments. In all matters of judgement or opinion arising from the interpretation of these clothing regulations, the decision of the tournament referee or on-site WSF/PSA representative shall be final, except that they may not rule illegal or unacceptable an item of clothing or a design which has been approved by the WSF/PSA.

Appropriate squash attire for women consists of:

Undergarments must be worn to provide respectful and tasteful coverage.

A shirt with or without sleeves, racer top, that provides full-coverage of the player’s mid-section.

A skirt, shorts or an athletic dress with or without compression shorts above the knee worn under playing shorts/skirts/dresses.

Socks or compression socks up to the knee are allowed with non-marking court shoes.

Players may wear clothing of any colour or combination of colours.

Appropriate squash attire for men consists of:

Undergarments must be worn to provide respectful and tasteful coverage.

A short-sleeved polo shirt with an attached collar, non-cotton t-shirt or sleeveless playing top that provides full-coverage of the player’s mid-section.

Shorts with or without compression shorts above the knee worn under playing shorts.

Socks and compression socks up to the knee are allowed with non-marking indoor court shoes.

Players may wear clothing of any colour or combination of colours.

Unacceptable attire shall include:

  • Sweatshirts

  • Tracksuits (tracksuit trousers may be worn for religious reasons after approval from Squash SA/WSF/PSA)

  • Long sleeved tops

  • Promotional cotton t-shirts or tank tops showing the midriff

  • Leggings (unless approved by Squash SA/SA Masters)

  • Aerobic bodysuit of any description

  • Long sleeved compression garments

  • Full length compression stockings (leggings) – unless approved by Squash SA

PSA Tour Rule Book 40 says:

All clothing shall conform to the accepted standards of decency and cultural/religious tradition of the country in which the competition is taking place, as adjudged by the tournament referee. Both players shall be obliged to wear distinctly different coloured clothing. The higher seeded player will have first choice. This colour/style must be worn for the duration of the match. If a player has to change his/her top during a match he/she must make sure that they wear the same colour and style of shirt as they started the match. It is the responsibility of the players to comply with this rule. As the PSA is very serious about its media obligations, non-compliance of this rule will result in application of the PSA Code of Conduct. Headwear, other than that normally worn for religious, cultural or medical reasons, is not permitted, with the exception of headbands, bandannas and straps for approved eye-guards.

Junior members are to abide by the rules of the national federation (Squash SA) sanctioning a tournament with regards to eye guards.

The National Federation (Squash SA) deems it mandatory for juniors to wear eye guards when on court and all players playing doubles, this rule will be upheld by WSF/PSA.

Any jewellery or watches worn by a player shall not be so conspicuous or brightly reflecting as to distract or un-sight an opponent and shall not be potentially dangerous. The tournament referee may require the removal of any piece of jewellery deemed to violate the above.

Referees are given the authority not to allow any player to play in contravention of any of the above.

Other squash events: the regulations relating to provincial leagues and tournaments should be defined by the provincial association or associate member (USSA and SA Schools). Similarly for club events and particularly social league, the club may determine the clothing regulations which suit the club and its members.

Training: where players are training, they may wear what feels comfortable to them provided that it is clean and generally acceptable squash attire. This means that if a player wishes to wear a crop top or full leggings, this is permitted for training purposes.
