Growthpoint IPT, East London (11 - 15 July)

The annual Growthpoint Inter-Provincial Tournament (Jarvis/Kaplan Cup) took place in full in East London for the first time since Covid-19. Over 200 players participated in the prestigious flagship Squash South Africa event, across six (6) sections.

Western Province registered four (4) teams this year, with x2 Ladies (A & B Sections) and x2 Men's (A & B Sections) and they all did our province very proud.

Most notably, our Ladies B team continued their winning ways by securing the Ransom Trophy once again. History dates that our Ladies B team have now won this coveted trophy for the 12th time, between the years 1988 - 2022. The team dropped only 3 points across their 4 fixtures, finishing with 77 points. 2nd placed Joburg B (58), with SACD B in 3rd (51). Congrats to newbies Nicole Gliddon (Fish Hoek Squash Club) and Rebecca Glanville (WPCC) for securing 100% match wins on debut!

Our Mens A team made the final once again, playing the defending champs SACD in a tough encounter. Unfortunately, SACD were just too strong and won the fixture 4/1 with John-Ross Malloch (WPCC) our only win at #4, defeating Jimmy Schlebusch for the 2nd time in the week. WP started off well earlier in the week, and came 2nd in their respective pool, defeating Zambia 15-7 in a must-win fixture on Monday afternoon. They had another tough 3/2 fixture against KZN A in the semi finals on Thursday, with Gary Wheadon (Milnerton Squash Club) closing out the match by winning 3/0, to set up the final showdown against SACD on Friday morning. Fighting spirit from the boys but silver it is for 2022.

The Ladies A section had 7 teams this year, with matches were spread across the 5 days and 2 matches on both Monday and Wednesday for WP A side. The Ladies A had a tough start losing on Day 1 to Northerns A; and to SACD on Day 3 in two very tight fixtures (2/3 in matches in both fixtures), but then went on to beat Joburg 3/2, Midlands 5/0, Zambia 5/0 and EP 4/1. Points difference between 2nd placed Northerns A (92), 3rd placed WP (88) and 4th placed Joburg Squash (85), demonstrated how close the fixtures were in the battle for second place.

With four (4) debutants, namely Adam Morkel (WPCC), Matthew Fehrsen (VOB), Dijan Schnider (Camps Bay Squash Club) & Wicus du Plessis (Camps Bay Squash Club), the Mens B started off incredibly well taking out Northerns B on Day 1 3/2, with Adam (#2), Matt (#3) and Ethan (#4) relieved to be out the shoe on the first day - all winning their matches. Initially seeded 6th, the team finished with their heads held high at 5th spot. Considering two matches a day plus such a young side, these guys played incredibly well and very quickly got into the spirit of Jarvis.

Final standings:

Ladies B: 1st

Mens A: 2nd

Ladies A: 3rd

Mens B: 5th

Congratulations to all the players and the WP administration for their hard work leading up to the tournament and a big thank you to all our supporters throughout the week.

Bring on Northerns 2023 :)
